Anonymous said: there is no "ask" on your styling page soooo...how did you get started as a stylist? are you primarily focused in photography? any advice for people trying to get a leg up? thanks!
Sorry about the no ask button. I have a more fashion driven tumblr called dressforblack.tumblr.com there is asks there.
To answer your question, I started going to school for fashion in San Francisco. There was a few times photographers would ask me to come and just lend a creative eye. I was always most critical about the styling and clothing. So when I moved to Los Angeles I started interning for celebrity stylist. From that I worked insanely hard ( we are talking 20 hour days all the time). I moved up and started freelancing myself as a styling assistant. I loved this cause I made a name for myself Magazines and other Stylist would contact me to come work for them for either a period of time like 2 jobs or on location jobs. It was great cause I worked in every kind of set and location. Everything from music videos to editorials.
My advice is live, eat and breathe styling. Once you start getting to assistant level you work 70 hour weeks and its up to YOU to make sure you get paid (trust me some will try to “forget” to pay you) Don’t complain and work work work. I know it sounds a bit generic but it true. Its not lunches with celebrities and hanging out with them. Its often extremely successful. As a stylist you are first on set and last to leave. Not to mention you need to be EXTREMELY detail oriented.
I don’t mean to sound like I am deterring you or anyone. Its just the facts. There are perfect moments where things come together or when you see a finished product, it makes all the stress worth it.
I love all types of styling I would say my favorite thus far is definitely editorial and look books.
Well I hope this rant helped you, please feel free to ask me ANYTHING, I have been through it all.
